| Dear
Wellness Subscriber, |

Greetings!
Already we’re starting to see the first signs of summer
in New Zealand and Australia. It’s time to get all those
summer clothes out, get the barbeque gassed up, and start planning
for being outdoors more.
t’s also time to get ready for those biting insects. This
is the time of year where they are most plentiful and active.
We know how annoying these little crawling, buzzing and flying
critters can be. Still, there are some things you can do to
prepare for them, and in this newsletter you’ll find some
of them.
Enjoy our newsletter this month! It has some good information
on how to deal with biting insects, so that you can enjoy your
summer as much as possible. May you and your family be healthy
and well.
Sincerely,

| Summer
Is Coming… And So Are Biting Insects. |
| |
Summer means lots of things. It means barbeques, being outdoors,
going to the beach, enjoying the sun and heat, visiting friends
and family, going on trips, etc. Unfortunately, summer also
means more insects, especially the biting kind. Insects usually
associated with summer—including bees, wasps, midges,
gnats, horseflies and mosquitoes—flourish during this
time of year. Not only do humans typically enjoy the heat and
dry air more, but so do insects.

As it gets hotter, we tend to wear less clothing. And with our
skin more exposed, we are more susceptible to those insects
looking for a meal or ready to cause us some kind of discomfort.
Without protection, our bare skin might as well be a welcome
mat to these crawling and flying bugs. Although stings and bites
from insects are usually not very dangerous or excessively painful,
they can cause considerable irritation, redness, swelling and
in some cases serious allergic reactions for certain people.
Traditionally, first aid treatments such as creams, lotions
or cold compresses have been used to alleviate insect bites
and stings. And of course, sprays and oils can help keep bugs
off you, and can sometimes ease a bite or clear up the ensuing
redness. But often these treatments can be a nuisance as well.
For instance, they can leave you feeling sticky and smelly.
Or they sometimes only provide temporary relief. Plus, they
usually contain ingredients that may not be very good for the
body, such as hydrocortisone, lidocaine and benzocaine.
This begs the question, then: Is there a safe, natural
and effective way to deal with biting insects?
Well,
a new natural remedy has been discovered to treat bites and
stings, one that can actually prevent swelling, pain, irritation
and allergic reactions. It is, quite simply, heat. Studies have
been completed in recent years to prove that a concentrated
application of heat can be very effective in treating and preventing
insect bites and stings. It has been shown that insect protein
molecules become decomposed at approximately 50°C, essentially
neutralizing the insect protein or venom from a bite or sting.
It appears that this particular temperature causes the immune
system in the human body to activate T-cells. These “soldier”
cells are then more able to identify other cells in the body
that have been affected by venom, at which point the T-Cells
will go about eliminating this venom from the body, providing
quick and effective relief from bites and stings. Studies continue
to be conducted determining the appropriate temperatures for
different venoms and the length of time these temperatures should
be applied.
The principle of heat to relieve bites and stings is not entirely
new. It has been used as a treatment for stings by stingrays
and other exotic fish species such as stonefish and zebrafish.
To treat these marine animal stings, victims should immediately
immerse the affected area in hot water (as hot as the victim
can tolerate without causing burns). This intense heat will
cause the venom from the sting to begin to disintegrate after
a period of 30-60 minutes.
Similarly, it has been shown that many proteins responsible
for allergic reactions (i.e. proteins from venom caused by bites,
stings, poison, etc.) will disintegrate at certain high temperatures.
It has also been found that high temperatures can help relieve
certain viruses, such as the herpes virus that leads to cold
sores (a.k.a. lip herpes).
By applying heat to an insect bite immediately after it has
occurred, it can neutralize the sting or bite, prevent swelling,
itching and irritation or allergic reactions, and ultimately
cause the bite or sting to gradually disappear. Not bad, considering
it is the simple principle of heat that does all this.
One
such heat-based device that has been shown to be effective against
bites and stings is Biteaway®. This compact device has been
shown to relieve insect bites and stings instantly and painlessly.
It contains a single-chip thermostat on its heating module,
which is heated to approximately 50°C. By placing the device
on the specific area of a bite or sting, Biteaway helps remove
the protein from the skin, thus relieving the bite or sting.
The controlled temperature delivered by Biteaway’s heating
module works to alleviate the bite or sting, usually within
about three seconds. When applied immediately after a bite or
sting, the apparatus actually prevents the bite from causing
itching or swelling. When applied some time after a bite, or
even after several hours, it will still help minimize the itching
and swelling of the bite, and will cause it to eventually disappear.
Biteaway has been dermatologically tested and works entirely
without chemical substances.
So when it gets hot out, and insects are buzzing about,
one of the best things you can do to alleviate their bites and
stings is to start using heat. It’s one way to actually
enjoy summer more. Because we know there’s nothing you
can do about biting insects… but at least there’s
something you can do to keep them from bugging you all summer.
